Edward A. Simms, RAD, USN
Edward A. Simms, 93, of Davenport, passed away Thursday,April 12, 2007, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 16, 2007, 11:30 a.m. at Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the mortuary. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
Edward was born October 27, 1913, in Shenandoah, Pa., the son of Frank and Anna (Donchak) Simms. He was united in marriage to Alberta Day on June 26, 1967, in Galena, Ill. Ed enlisted in the United States Navy in 1935 and served on the battleships USS Tennessee and USS San Francisco as lead radioman until
1945.
While working at the Frankfort Arsenal in Philadelphia, Ed earned an associate’s degree in engineering. After a short time at the Babbit Ammunition Department in Nevada, he relocated to the Rock Island Arsenal and retired in 1968.
Ed’s hobbies included fishing, gardening, bird watching and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed watching the History and Animal Channel, and listening to music, especially, Polka. Ed was a very loving old-fashioned family man.
He was a member of the American Legion and St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Davenport.
Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife of 39 years, Alberta, Davenport; sons and daughter-in-law, Edward Jr. and Barbara Simms, Philadelphia, Pa., and Robert Simms, Phoenixville, Pa.; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Cary Dalton, Davenport, Linda and John Rowan, Bowmansville, Pa., and Trudy and Andy DeVine, Davenport; sister and brother-in-law, Leona and Bill Hoffman, Cinnamenson, N.J.; brother,Adam Simms, Shenandoah, Pa.; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
