HE WAS AWARDED THE CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR FOR HIS GALLANTRY IN THE THIRD BATTLE OF SAVO ISLAND, NOV. 13,1942. WHILE HIS FLAGSHIP THE ATLANTA WAS ENGAGING THE JAPANESE BATTLESHIP HIEI HE WAS MORTALLY WOUNDED.
